A shared place in our subsidised weaving studio was just the start for this ambitious textile designer.
Even as a recent graduate of the Royal College of Art, the fashion world was knocking on weaver Alice Timmis‘ door. She moved into Cockpit Arts with a place in our weave studio, subsidised for two years thanks to generous funding from The Clothworkers’ Company. “I had begun to take on commissions and I needed access to a loom as I wasn’t able to afford one of my own” Alice says.
In translating the vision of designers into fabric, Alice is elevating the status of the maker in the fashion world. “I work with clients to develop fabrics from my existing fabric collection. I also offer bespoke commission hand woven lengths, and embroideries. I work mostly with the fashion industry, as well as with artists and interior designers” Alice explains. Her work has won her a legion of high-profile fans, not least Vogue writer Suzy Menkes and several well-known fashion brands. “Seeing my fabrics used by fashion designers each season at London Fashion Week is among the highlights of my career,” she tells us.
Cockpit’s support was crucial in helping her market her ability to translate a fashion designer’s vision directly into fabric, and in giving her the practical and legal advice she needed to manage difficult clients: “I now have a more professional approach to my contracts, for example, I have established terms and conditions and a more systemised process of collaboration.”
Alice has now moved from her shared space to a private studio, with her own loom, in our Cockpit studios in Deptford.
In association with Cockpit, Alice also completed a residency last year at the Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft, where she developed a new collection of hand-woven fashion fabrics.
Clearly destined for great things, we can’t wait to see what she does next.
