Joining our star-studded cast for #cockpitedit is modern furniture restorer, up-cycler and eco-designer Jay Blades.

Perhaps best known at the moment as the main man on BBC’s The Repair Shop, Jay divides his time between being in front of the camera and having his own successful business in modern furniture restoration, Jay & Co.

Jay is a mainly self-taught craftsman but has been incredibly lucky to have had guidance from some of the master in the art of restoration over the years.

Originally from Hackney, Jay is dyslexic and after leaving school at 15 with no qualifications, he eventually managed to get back on track studying for a degree in criminology and philosophy at Buckingham University before finding his true vocation in restoration.

He’s an inspirational motivator and was the former co-founder of award-winning social enterprises Out of The Dark and Street Dreams. Working with disengaged and disadvantaged young people, Jay has been able to mentor and support thousands of individuals over the years to realise their full potential.

Jay’s top choices from Cockpit’s makers for his dream gift list are:

L-R Memories of Green/Arturo Soto, Vanessa Hogge, Katharine Coleman MBE, Matthew Warner

Mexican-born award-winning designer and maker Arturo Soto creates evocative pieces in many materials but extols the virtues of the beauty and importance of designing without waste.

Working predominantly in porcelain, Vanessa Hogge crafts one-off flowerheads and vessels. Grounded by years of expertise as a ceramicist, she takes an instinctive, visceral approach to each piece, painstakingly sculpting every petal and anther by hand so that no two flowers are identical.

Widely acknowledged as perhaps the foremost glass engraver in the UK today, Katharine Coleman MBE, has exhibited her work widely in the UK, Europe, USA and Japan and it can be seen in many public collections and illustrated in publications.

Matthew Warner is a potter making refined and considered thrown ceramics. His work explores the complex ideas and social influences embodied within seemingly simple pottery forms.
