20th September 2017

Cockpit Arts is offering tours of its craft business incubator centres to London based school and young learner groups (aged 16-24), free of charge for the remainder of 2017, thanks to the generous support of the Drapers’ Charitable Fund. During these ‘behind-the-scene’ tours, teachers and pupils will have the opportunity to meet a selection of independent craftspeople in their working environment; see how they work; view their creations; discuss the creative processes involved in their production, and hear about their career trajectories as well as their future aspirations.

To ensure a focus on specific teaching and learning requirements, each tour will be created for and with the school: They will comprise a mix of craft disciplines such as textiles, jewellery, ceramics, and specialist crafts, as well as craft business owners who are at different stages of career and business development. Selected craft business owners and their studio assistants will present an outline of the qualifications and pathways studied, to be used as a starting point for learners own research. Some of the makers will have had a clear plan from the outset, whilst others will have studied non creative subjects before deciding to develop their craft skill and practice. Studio assistants are likely to be Apprentices, earning whilst learning; others will be freelance workers in the field of business administration. Each tour will last one hour and will comprise visits up to 3 makers with time for Q&A.
